Up Its Own Artifice
Somebody give me a job with the TLS, or the RLB, and I promise I will complete the following sentence:
'Jim Crace, whose name rhymes with "pace" and not "patchy", pace "pace"...'
I might have been a book reviewer, but I only got 40% in my English 'A' level: more "lite" than "literature".
However, my major work of cultural criticism, Smugged by Reality: The Cryptic Crossword and the Downfall of the Anglosphere will be published in 2009 unless I stick to my resolution to give up superciliousness and become a spirulina farmer.
